(Masque mortuaire (Moltke))

All Rainer’s work revolves around the ideas of death and sacrifice, words that he chose himself for the title of his exhibition at the Museum in 1984. The death mask, says the artist, is the ‘dialectical pendant to our need for expression and emotion,’ and this is also, like his other works on photography, the necessary complement to the absence of image in the already painted canvasses that he covered with paint (1954-1965). Rainer accords very great importance to the series of ‘Death Masks’ (1977-1978). After a period of work on his own body, based on a ‘mannered exaggeration,’ he then tackled the theme of death. He first used photographs from books, then photographed the masks anew in framings that allowed him a more abstract and more unsettling take on the immobile features of philosophers, musicians or soldiers, working them over them with oil paint and Indian ink.
