L'Arbre
1910

L'Arbre
1910
Framed by two other partly-concealed trunks, the three takes on the appearance of a real character.
ln this painting, Albert Gleizes abandons the synthetic style that characterised his work after 1909 to adopt Cézanne's precept: "treat nature through the cylinder, the sphere and the cane". After his participation in the Abbaye de Créteil (1905-1906) literary and artistic community, the artist showed a predilection for the theme of trees, which he endowed with a symbolic significance. Gleizes succeeded in reconciling a vast field of vision and a surface whose flatness he accentuated by using a "tapestry" touch and various shades of green and light-brown.The pictorial surface is brought to life with a zigzag touch and impasto material characteristic of Picasso's later style.
