In the middle of the Fifties, Robert Ryman abandoned music, his original passion, and decided to focus on painting. He then sought to experiment with the various possibilities offered by the tools and materials available to painters. His work consisted in exploring what Paul Klee used to call “the anatomy of the picture”. Ryman explored every parameter of his art with impressive logic, in terms of format, support, medium, tool and gesture, right through to the way the painting was fixed to the wall.
