Composition théâtrale
1981
"They were very large colour framed photographs of very small objects that I made out of cardboard and enlarged".
Between 1980 and 1984, Boltanski made several Compositions: grotesque, heroic, theatrical, Japanese, architectural. Precursors of his Shadow Theatres dating from 1985, these works start out as objects cobbled together from found materials that couId fit in a pocket. The little figurines, enlarged in the photographs, became gigantic. Simultaneously toys and symbolic representations, the puppets of Theatrical Compositions sum up the resignation of human beings with regard to their fate.
