Le Luxe I
[été 1907]
The palette of pale colours and the execution of a large pencilstudy of the same size echo the Tuscan frescoes that Matisse saw during his trip to ltaly in 1907.
Luxury 1 has more impact than meaning: what is this giant beach Venus doing, and her ladyin-waiting with a bouquet of flowers? What does this new take on the pastoral theme tell us? When this work was presented at the Autumn Salon in 1907, critics detected a certain disdain for form, abstraction or an unfinished painting, while others praised its decorative dimension. The scenery has been simplified, using almost iridescent colour blacks, applied with a vibrant touch and swiftly brushed.
