L'Orage
[1947 - 1948]
"I would say that he is formidable, this man, that he has never been wilder, more thunderous or more awakened by his own storm" the poet Francis Ponge wrote enthusiastically.
The tormented material of L 'Orage [Storm Man] carries the existential drama of its time. With resemblance to "the rock or the stump as much as a flayed man", this broad, faceless figure embodies the fusion between man and nature, the fight between the strength of mass and the phenomenon of erosion. Richier continues the legacy of Rodin while fully adhering to the post-war matterist and informal tendency.
