In 1968, Wolf D. Prix, Michael Holzer and Helmut Swiczinsky founded the “Sky Blue Co-op”: Coop Himmelblau, later Coop Himmelb(l)au, bringing out the “bau” (German for building). The installations, architectural happenings and utopian projects of the beginnings, later gave way to improvisation, deconstruction and an unsettling use of materials. The architecture of the Vienna apartment complex of 1983 is open, poetic and subjective. Tensions and forces were determined by a method recalling the automatic writing, a process later computerized.
