Fait partie de l'ensemble | Seiichi Furuya et Christine Furuya-Gössler: Face to Face Ensemble (Ensemble indissociable) Préface de l'artiste : « Face to Face, 1978-1985 At the beginning of 2018, I set out to clean out my attic. I decided to use the new year as an opportunity to sort through the piles of things that had gone unattended for so many years. The main purpose of the cleanup, however, was to locate Christine's belongings and sort through their details. I had planned to showcase Christine's own "work" in a solo exhibition planned for 2019. I found various items related to her, some of which I had already forgotten and some of which I was seeing for the first time. In addition to written materials, I also found Super 8 film, cassette tapes, and pocket camera films. As I studied the materials I found in detail, I realized something. It was when I found a slide film of me standing behind a tripod with a 6 x 7 camera on the beach in my hometown of Izu, Japan, in 1978. It was a picture of Christine standing at the end of the wharf with a camera around her neck, black rubber boots and a bamboo pole, taking my picture with the Leica she was carrying. I was a little excited and whispered, "Face to Face". Further research into the details of the pocket camera films and the photos she took with her 35mm camera revealed that Christine often took photos of me and that we took photos of each other at about the same time. This photographing and being photographed continued with varying frequency until the day Christine took her own life in East Berlin in October 1985. This work, "Face to Face", consists of 150 photographs. It begins with a photograph of Christine taken in my apartment in Graz on February 28, 1978, and ends with a photograph of Christine with Komyo taken on October 6, 1985, with Cecilienhof Palace, the site of the so-called "Potsdam Conference" after World War II, in the background. Seiichi Furuya October 7, 2020 In Graz All photos were taken by Christine and me mutually, with one exception*. *Graz, 1979: Worklist #59 was taken with a self-timer. » | |
