The experience of our corporal actions, whether in the present moment or in our memories of them, is always partial. Some parts of the body, objects and sensations are central, while others are left to one side. Noé Soulier’s new creation, First Memory, combines choreographic, musical and plastic research to give a sensorial nature to this fragmentary dimension of bodily experience, through movement, music and scenography.
By removing the things that make everyday gestures - avoiding, hitting, throwing or catching - familiar, Noé Soulier renders the strangeness and elusiveness of our own bodies perceptible. His collaborations with composer Karl Naegelen, the Ictus ensemble and visual artist Thea Djordjadze provide more than a musical or scenographic accompaniment in which the action takes place. They create a context in which gestures, sounds and objects mutually determine each other. The sensorial and affective dimension of gesture becomes the nodal point that unites the plastic, musical and choreographic dimensions of the work.

Noé Soulier’s work explores choreography and dance through multiple devices including the stage, the museum space and theoretical reflection. The choreographic exhibition "Performing Art" (2017), created at the Centre Pompidou, overturned the usual position of dance in the museum by bringing the exhibition to the stage and turning the hangers into performers and the installation of works into choreography. Noé Soulier’s practice is both conceptual and deeply rooted in movement.
